Getting to central Europe has never been easier.  There are regular  scheduled flights  from the UK , other parts of Europe and other international destinations. The roads are good if you choose to drive or you can even take the train.

Getting to  .... Austria

Flying to Austria is easy as there are regular scheduled flights throughout the year. The country  is well served with airports across the country. The two major ones are Salzburg and Vienna but there are also airports in Graz, Klagenfurt, Linz and Innsbruck. It's also possible to fly to Munich, Bratislava or Maribor and drive into Austria.

Flight details do change from time to time. A pretty constant ,reliable service is the Ryanair one from Stansted to Salzburg - normally 2 flights everyday of the year. There are also flights from regional airports in the winter in particular - so it's worth having a good look on the internet for details.

Our link to WEGOLO lets you find low cost flights from all the operators in one easy go. Mid week flights are often cheaper and the airports are quieter.

When you get to Austria it's easy to hire a car, take public transport or organise a private taxi transfer. Car hire in Austria is not the cheapest in Europe - so it's worth shopping around- try getting a quote from our CAR TRAWLER link. If you hire a car in Austria it will have winter tyres fitted when necessary and a Vignette to cover mtorway tolls ( see below) If you rent in Germany or elsewhere they won't.

Public transport in Austria is excellent - it's clean and reliable. From all airports there are bus links to the nearest main station or bus station from where you can pick up transport to the surrounding area. If you need to check how to get to where you want to go - the Austrian bus and train companies have an excellent website

www.oebb.at

From this you can get full details of the services across the country and print them out. It even covers links to the surrounding  countries - we recently used it to get someone from Bad Ischl to Brno for the motorcycle racing there - it worked like a dream!

Taxi transfers are best organised with a taxi firm based in your destination. They tend to be a bit cheaper than ones based in Salzburg and Vienna. You'll also find that if you when you have bought a place in Austria, it's worth making friends with a local company who will give you reliable service  and normally a better price!

If you are travelling to Salzburg and  then onto the Salzkammergut, let us know as we can recommend local companies for your transfers

For those preferring to drive the motorways through France, Belgium and  Germany provide a fast and easy route into Austria. In fact it is motorway all the way to Salzburg. If you are travelling from the UK, take a look at the ferry crossings from Hull to Rotterdam, particularly if it's a long drive for you to the Channel Ports. The Hull-Rotterdam route means it's easy to drop across onto the German motorways. There are no tolls on the German motorways which is another good reason to avoid the French route.

Just remember that in winter it is law to have winter tyres on your vehicle - it doesn't just apply to Austrian vehicles. Snow chains are worth packing in winter, although you'll probably never take them out of the box as the roads are kept really clear.

Second thing to remember is you need to pay a toll to go on the motorway in Austria. You can buy a VIGNETTE ( windscreen sticker) at the motorway service stations as you are approaching the board with Austria - it's about €7,60 for 10 days - and not worth risking a heavy fine if you are caught without one. If

For those who prefer not to fly - try the train. With the new International station at St Pancras getting the train to Europe is even more straightforward. To get the best prices you need to book early.

Tip of the day...

Don't book a round trip. Book two separate flights !
It's often cheaper. i.e. check the price of the return trip
on its own. It is quoted in Euros and often saves £20.

( Don't tell everyone ! )

If you are coming to see us at Euroburo Limited, our main office is in Bad Ischl. The nearest airport is Salzburg.

Here are details of how to get to us  -

On arrival at Salzburg airport there is a trolleybus service every ten minutes into Salzburg centre direct to the main bus station and railway station which are side by side in the city centre. The trolleybus leaves from right outside the main airport door.

There is an hourly bus service from the main Salzburg bus station to Bad Ischl which calls at St Gilgen & Strobl  on the way. The busses are clean, punctual, no smoking and air conditioned. The bus takes just over an hour.

The busses typically leave Salzburg hourly at
08.15, 09.15, 10.15 etc
and the last busses to Bad Ischl are 20.15 & 22.15
These times were current as at October 2002. If we are advised of any timetable changes we will post them up.

For the return journey from Salzburg centre, the electronic indicator boards at the bus station list the route as no 77 and the number of minutes left before the bus is due to depart is also indicated. The German for airport is "Flughafen" and the bus is clearly marked.

The bus stations in St Gilgen & Strobl, although small, have a café with terrace, a covered waiting room, and clean toilets. Very civilised !
